The Lodge “Solon” was founded in 1919 and was recognised by the Most Serene Grand Orient of Greece in 1921 as the Worshipful Lodge “Solon” No. 55. This recognition was secured through the efforts of Brother Georgios Petrides, who travelled to Athens in person for the purpose.
The Lodge takes its name from the ancient Athenian lawgiver Solon, who, according to tradition, visited Cyprus and contributed to the flourishing of the ancient city of Soli.
Until the end of 2005, the Lodge continued its Labours, bearing the same distinctive title, under the Auspices of the Grand Lodge of Greece, successor to the Most Serene Grand Orient.
Since 2006, following the establishment of the Grand Lodge of Cyprus, the Lodge “Solon” has worked under the Auspices of the Grand Lodge of Cyprus, bearing the distinctive title Worshipful Lodge “Solon” No. 2.
The Lodge is housed in, and holds its Labours at, the premises of the “Solon” Masonic Foundation at 59A Onasagorou Street, Nicosia. The property was purchased in 1939, rebuilt from its foundations in 1963 and extensively renovated in 2006.
In 1976, the “Solon” Masonic Foundation was registered with the Ministry of the Interior under the Societies and Institutions Law of 1972.
On 30 May 2024, the non-profit company “Masonic Lodge Solon Ltd” was incorporated.
Since its foundation, the Lodge has welcomed a total of 738 members.
In 1924, the Lodge “Solon” founded the “Solon” Night School. Its purpose was to give underprivileged and working fellow citizens the opportunity to attend classes at secondary-school level. The School was recognised by the Education Office of the time, and lessons were taught by teachers, both Freemasons and non-Freemasons, most of whom offered their services without remuneration. The Lodge “Solon”, through the Masonic Foundation, has provided and continues to provide financial support to various charitable institutions, as well as to fellow citizens in need. From time to time, it also awards scholarships and grants to pupils and students.
